What is CNC?

What is CNC?

CNC is an abbreviation of ‘Computer numerical control’ and is used as a blanket term to refer to a wide range of cutting/milling machines.

To be able to use a CNC machine you first need a design, these designs can be created with CAD software. You can then create toolpaths from your design, this is where you specify the type of tool used and the speed that the cutter travels. Once you have your toolpaths created you then need to post process them, which basically converts the toolpaths into a language the CNC machine can understand, this language is known as G-code.

Once you have your G-code created you can fire up the machine and start cutting.

I hope this explains the basic processes of what goes into a CNC cutting service, if you have any questions please get in touch with us.
